Jays in Newfoundland
Terra Nova Provincial Park
Sharing a breakfast
with two Canada Jays -
they're not Gray Jays anymore
Well, they're gray,
but no longer named that
for Canada
they're named
as they were
when I learned them
when I was young
Or "Whisky Jack" -
they answer to too
from the lumber camps
who tamed them
were tamed by them
perhaps
One perched on the hatch
of my Honda and gazed -
“do you have desert?”
perhaps what was meant
I didn't, so touched its bill
with my finger
as a sign of friendship
The bird accepted
gently taking my finger
in its bill
held it for a few seconds
and flew away
