Twilight

A Redstart darts between the branches,
the only songbird that I see
The trail is silent, growing dark -
it all belongs to me

Out on the sand bar
not an inch of space -
it’s packed with Gulls

Bill to tail
and side by side
but then at once
they’re in the air

The Big Bird has arrived
and lands, majestic
Royal Raptor
owner of it all

His mate soon joins him
and they rule
the sandbar,
Narrows,
all

Side by side, close as one
while shorebirds stare in awe
they flit and flutter fast
zooming here and there

They land as one
and disappear
yet of course
still there

A Merlin darts out
from the marsh
and quickly back again
Talons empty, the Peeps are safe
perhaps they were not seen?

And so again, another day,
just footsteps from my home,
this little poem fails to say
how much I love this wondrous place!
