Hidden Things

I don’t see the whale
that greeted me here
I don’t see the Loons
the two that appeared

Just yesterday

I don’t see the shore
that once was in front of me
They all were in front of me,
perhaps they’re in front of me now

I don’t see them

The tide is not high -
is that a Walrus head?
Just a rock, of course
that my brain created

Why not a whale
Or a bird or a shore,
or a walrus
or much more?

Where is the whale?
is “not here” a place -
like the ice berg now hiding
in yet another hidden space?

I’ll watch a bit longer
as the fog eats up time
‘til darkness embraces
what cannot be seen

and I see all the faces
of what might have been
