I, for one, have lived among them and been accepted as one of the flock, gaggle, whatever (the corn helped). This is my attempt to present them in an empathetic light.

Peaceful Cobra Chickens

Morning,
just we two,
Yes we’re geese
you knew that too

Peaceful now,
we’re only love
We love us,
we love our eggs
we love our children too

And so we hiss
if you approach too near
We’ll bite you too -
we don’t know fear

Or yes we do -
we fear you most
but we can’t hide,
we stand our post

And now, right now
we are just here
in morning mist -
please don’t come near

Please let us have
this quiet time
Just one brief touch
of life sublime
